Terrifier 3, the fourth installment of the independent horror saga directed by Damien Leone (yes, there is one before the first), has made a strong debut in U.S. theaters this weekend, crowning itself as the big Halloween hit of 2024. This confirms it as one of the most successful horror sagas of recent years, which came from complete obscurity and B-movie status to achieve one hit after another.

Starring the macabre Art the Clown, Terrifier 3 has grossed 18.3 million dollars in its opening, surpassing all expectations and establishing itself as the highest-grossing in the franchise to date. Considering its budget was only 2 million dollars, the success is even more remarkable.

A modern Freddy Krueger

One of the greatest achievements of Terrifier 3 has been surpassing major productions like Joker: Folie à Deux, which has suffered a brutal box office drop, falling 82% in its second weekend. Thus, while the Joker sequel has barely managed 7 million, Leone’s visceral slasher has raked in 18.3 million, making it clear that Art the Clown has secured his own throne in modern horror cinema.

This phenomenon, nevertheless, has been around for a while. The second film in the saga, Terrifier 2, surprised audiences in 2022 thanks to its brutality and excess, reaching completely unexpected audiences. But what is happening with Terrifier 3 is a true cult phenomenon that is succeeding worldwide. Every Halloween, the figure of Art the Clown grows more and more, becoming an icon of modern horror and, why not say it, the rival to beat of other classic villains in the genre like Freddy Krueger or Michael Myers.
