After nearly two decades of inactivity, the racing game series Tokyo Xtreme Racer has returned with a new installment released in Early Access on January 23, 2025. This latest version has been enthusiastically received by fans of the genre, garnering over 4,800 reviews on Steam, 95% of which are positive. This excellent reception has placed the game as the fourth best of the year 2025 so far, according to the Steam 250 algorithm.
Tokyo Xtreme Racer is a single-player video game featuring arcade racing set in the vibrant streets of Tokyo. Players have praised not only the gameplay but also the extensive amount of content it offers, all without the inclusion of microtransactions, an aspect that has garnered favorable reviews in a market where this model is increasingly common.
Since its launch in Early Access, the developers have announced that they will focus on improving the game by taking into account user feedback over the next four months, before the arrival of the full version 1.0. “The intention behind the Early Access release is to do justice to the franchise,” the creators explain on the Steam page. They consider it crucial to obtain feedback from both veterans of the saga and new racing game enthusiasts.
A Game with a Long History Behind It
The history of Tokyo Xtreme Racer dates back to the SNES era, with installments spanning consoles like Dreamcast and PS2. The last installment of the main series was Import Tuner Challenge for Xbox 360, released in 2006. Although some mobile spin-offs were released in the following years, the main series had remained dormant until this exciting return, which has proven to be worth the wait after so many years.
