This Safari setting keeps your searches from being exposed

Apple’s recent iOS 18.4 update has quietly introduced a feature in Safari that could compromise your privacy—but there’s also now a way to turn it off. While convenient for quick access to past queries, the new “Recent Searches” list has left many users uncomfortable with the idea that their search history is suddenly more visible than before.

Why Safari now shows recent searches

When you open a new tab or clear a current URL, Safari in iOS 18.4 now displays a list of your recent search queries directly under the search bar. This list persists until you start typing something new. While the feature is designed to save time—allowing you to tap and revisit previous searches—it can also expose potentially sensitive queries to anyone glancing at your screen.

How to disable the feature in iOS 18.4

Thankfully, Apple has responded to privacy concerns in the latest iOS 18.4 beta by allowing users to disable the “Recent Searches” feature. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open the Settings app and scroll to Safari under the Apps section.
  2. In Safari’s settings, find the Search section.
  3. Toggle off the switch next to “Show Recent Searches.”

Once disabled, your previous queries will no longer appear in plain view, offering a small but meaningful boost to your privacy while browsing.

While Safari’s new search recall was meant to be helpful, Apple now offers a way to reclaim a bit more digital discretion—something more important than ever in today’s always-on world.
