Now that online security is more important than ever, Twitter, which we must now call X, has taken a very important step towards modernizing its authentication methods. The social network has officially announced the global rollout of a new login option on the iPhone: the use of passkeys. Initially available only for iPhone users in the United States, this system is now being extended worldwide, marking a before and after in security and convenience for everyone.

Much more security for the account and convenience for us

The implementation of passkeys by X represents a significant change, as it offers us a more secure and user-friendly alternative compared to traditional passwords. Developed in collaboration with the FIDO Alliance and companies such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft, passkey technology allows us to log in using secure authentication methods, such as facial recognition or biometrics, eliminating the need to remember and type any passwords.

X has highlighted that the use of passkeys not only simplifies the login process, but also provides better protection for accounts against phishing attacks and unauthorized access, since these keys are individually generated for each device.

To activate the passkey option in our X account, assuming that our app is updated to the latest available version, we must follow the following steps:

  1. We open the X application on our iPhone or iPad.
  2. We tap on our profile picture to access the options.
  3. We tap on Settings and Support.
  4. We enter Settings and Privacy.
  5. We tap on Security and Account Access.
  6. We enter Security.
  7. We activate the Passkey option.
  8. We confirm the activation by entering the password for our account.

From now on, to log in to Twitter, all we have to do is authenticate ourselves with Face ID or Touch ID. The system will take care of the rest. We can still log in with our password in both the app and the web, if we wish. In fact, on the web, where passkeys support is not yet implemented, this is our only option.

While Elon Musk verifies Twitter users against their will, Twitter has a new head of security and we hope that the new identification system will be extended to more devices and platforms, what is clear is that our Twitter account will greatly benefit from the added security. In the meantime, we will benefit from the fact that logging in is as easy as opening the app and identifying ourselves by tapping a button. Clearly, very good news.
