Warner Bros wanted to split several Harry Potter movies into two parts

The Harry Potter universe, created by J.K. Rowling, consists of seven books that have been adapted into eight films. Although Warner Bros. considered the possibility of splitting several installments into multiple films, ultimately only the seventh book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was brought to the screen in two parts. This decision, controversial at the time, was due to the complexity of the story and its significance within the saga.

A franchise that has had to make difficult decisions at various times

One of the longest works in the series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, had so much content that the screenwriters faced the challenge of condensing its plot to fit the movie’s time limit. In fact, the adaptation of this book required drastic cuts to emphasize only the essentials, resulting in a film that barely exceeds two hours in length.

On the other hand, the fourth film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, was also considered a strong candidate to be split into two parts. However, director Mike Newell strongly opposed this idea, arguing that it was feasible to address the complexity of the plot in a single film. According to Newell, making two movies would have been embarrassing” and his approach allowed viewers to experience the development of significant events, including the tragic resurrection of Voldemort.

The discussion surrounding the possibility of splitting films in the series highlights how creative decisions can be shaped by the directors’ vision versus the commercial intentions of the studios. Currently, some rumors suggest that other books in the series could be considered for new adaptations, which leaves the door open for future explorations within the vast magical world of Harry Potter.
