As artificial intelligence becomes more present in our daily lives, a new Pew Research study reveals a surprising disconnect between experts and the general public. While professionals in the AI field express growing optimism, most U.S. adults remain skeptical—and even fearful—of its impact.
Americans feel uneasy about AI’s future
According to the study, 43% of Americans believe AI will likely harm them, compared to just 24% who think it will benefit them. Another 33% remain unsure. The numbers show a clear trend: AI is viewed more as a danger than a promise.
When asked about the broader impact of AI over the next two decades, 35% expect it to have a negative effect on the U.S., while only 17% foresee a positive outcome. The rest are either undecided or see both pros and cons.
This widespread doubt underscores a growing demand for responsible, human-centered AI development, where users feel secure and in control.
Apple could reshape how we perceive AI
Apple might be uniquely positioned to change this narrative. Unlike most players in the AI race, Apple enjoys an extraordinary level of public trust. Its long-standing focus on privacy and usability could become major assets as AI becomes more integrated into personal devices.
While Apple hasn’t led the first wave of AI tools, it could stand out by building features that are easy to use, privacy-respecting, and creativity-enhancing. If done right, Apple could show that AI doesn’t have to be scary—it can be helpful, intuitive, and even inspiring.
In a moment where public opinion is uncertain, there’s an opening for a company to lead with empathy and simplicity. Apple, more than most, might just be that company.
