Chromecast USB: this is what you can do with it

While most users plug their Chromecast with Google TV into the wall and forget about it, its USB-C port hides some powerful extra functions. With the right hub, you can dramatically expand what your Chromecast can do—going far beyond simple video streaming.

Watch files from external storage

The USB-C port allows you to connect external storage devices like hard drives or SD cards. With a basic file manager app, you can browse, access, and play content directly from these devices. However, since the Chromecast still needs power, you’ll need a USB hub that provides both power and data passthrough.

Expand the internal storage

Chromecast with Google TV comes with only 8 GB of storage, which fills up quickly. To solve this, you can connect a USB stick or SD card and format it as internal storage. Once formatted, go to Settings > System > Storage and select “Migrate data to this storage” to make it the primary disk for apps and data.

Use Ethernet for faster connection

For smoother 4K streaming, a wired connection is ideal. By using a hub with an Ethernet port, you can connect the Chromecast directly to your router, bypassing Wi-Fi and improving speed and stability. This is especially useful if your router is far from your TV or you stream high-bandwidth content.

Power it from your TV

In some cases, you can even power the Chromecast directly from a USB 3.0 port on your TV. This removes the need for an extra power outlet. Just enable USB debugging in the developer settings and check if your TV delivers enough power for stable use.
