Backing out of a project is sometimes necessary, and there’s no reason to see it as a failure. But it’s true that seeing giants like Apple doing this is always surprising. Apple has confirmed the cancellation of its augmented reality glasses project, known internally as N107, which would connect with Mac. The decision, reported by analyst Mark Gurman, marks a new phase in the company’s quest to define its approach in the augmented reality market, leaving Vision Pro as its only proposal in this field.

Something Normal in Apple’s Tone
The cancellation of these glasses should not be interpreted as a complete failure. According to Steve Jobs’ philosophy, Apple has maintained a high standard by canceling projects that do not meet its expectations. I am as proud of the things we haven’t done as the ones we have done, Jobs stated, a mantra that remains present in the company’s corporate culture.
The development of the N107 faced various technical complications, initially intended to connect to the iPhone. However, the limitations in power and battery life of the phone led to considering a connection with Mac. Despite having more powerful processors, the dependency on the computer and restricted mobility made the project unfeasible. Additionally, the nature of the glasses made it difficult to justify when a traditional monitor could fulfill the same function.
In contrast, Vision Pro continues to advance, with a focus on its adoption in the business sector. Apple plans to lighten and reduce the cost of the device in future versions, while working on key technologies such as microLED displays. Despite internal concerns about the direction of the project, the decision to cancel the Mac-connected glasses points to a strategy more focused on meeting the company’s demanding quality standards.
Thus, Apple seems to prioritize a long-term vision for augmented reality, choosing to focus its resources on a final goal that is truly innovative.
