Point-and-click graphic adventure games aren’t exactly common nowadays with battle royale games like Fortnite, and PUBG taking the spotlight. Despite this, over the last decade, indie developer Wadjet Eye Games has created some of the best story-heavy games in this format. First was The Shivah, then the Blackwell series, and now Unavowed, which takes place in the Blackwell universe.

Why you should be playing Unavowed

The artwork is nostalgic and familiar

Wadjet Eye Games has continued to use the same retro graphics for the majority of its titles, and Unavowed is no different. But that doesn’t mean those graphics haven’t improved over time. If you look at Unavowed compared to The Shivah, you will see incredibly different games. Unavowed has successfully found a way to keep their retro graphics but continue to make them feel impressive and new.

The gameplay is simple but engaging

Many point-and-click adventure games can seem lackluster in terms of gameplay from an outside perspective. However, Unvowed really breaks this expectation by building its core gameplay around choice. I

nstead of playing like a normal point-and-click adventure game that primarily focuses on solving puzzles (which this game does have), the main gameplay hook is your choices. Every choice you make affects something, whether it be the story or achievements. Even the simple choice of playing a male or female can change the narrative in unexpected ways.

The narrative is amazing

The story itself is what’s truly captivating about this game. You choose to play as either a cop, bartender, or an actor who has recently been possessed by a demon. You then deal with the aftermath of what you’ve done, and what you can do to help those who’ve been affected. The game takes a new approach to ancient supernatural concepts in today’s world. Fans of the Blackwell series will be particularly excited by the many homages to it. The game itself takes place five years after the events of Blackwell Epiphany, and a lot has changed! If you were curious to learn more about the Blackwell world, then this game is the perfect opportunity for you to do that.
