Microsoft’s scheduled updates for August are causing some users to experience a “blue screen of death.” The company has pulled the update and is advising users who installed the patch to uninstall it.

The bug affects mostly 64-bit Windows 7 users. I am running 64-bit Windows 8 and the updates have not affected my system.

Users are reporting that the updates installed fine but would then prevent their system from booting after restarting or shutting down. Microsoft has released an FAQ and website detailing how to uninstall the update.

The procedure is not for the faint of heart. You’ll need to boot into Safe Mode. Users who can’t even boot into Safe Mode will need to boot from their Windows install DVD or USB drive. You’ll then need to delete several files and modify the registry. Check out Microsoft’s complete guide on how to uninstall the patch.
