Recently, Pete Hines, former executive of Bethesda, emphasized the importance of developers in the success of Xbox Game Pass. In an interview, Hines highlighted that the future of the platform largely depends on the content that these creators provide, adding that finding a balance between the needs of the service and the interests of the developers is crucial to avoid issues in this subscription model.
GamePass or barbarism
Microsoft has confirmed that Xbox Game Pass is generating profits, but this statement does not include potential losses in first-party game sales, which could affect developers’ earnings. Shannon Loftis, former vice president of Xbox Game Studios, corroborated Hines’ concern in a LinkedIn post, noting that although Game Pass has rescued titles that would have otherwise failed, the mass adoption of games through this service could harm retail sales revenue.
Loftis mentioned that for a game to be successful on Game Pass, it often needs to be designed from the ground up with post-launch monetization in mind. This complicates the situation, as despite games like Hi-Fi Rush having received positive critical reception, the funding and viability of the studio behind them are called into question, wondering whether popularity on Game Pass is enough to ensure their permanence or if sales remain the main indicator of success.
The tensions in the business model raise questions about the future of Xbox Game Pass and the value that Microsoft places on its studios based on the number of players. If the focus shifts too much towards the subscription service, developers fear that quality and profitability will be sacrificed in the process, creating a breeding ground for conflicts in the industry.
