Twitter may have encountered a hurdle while unveiling its new logo: it appears that Meta holds the rights to it.

Elon Musk, as you know, bought Twitter for $44 billion last year and announced on Sunday that the social media platform would be renamed X.

The issue is that Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta had already registered a logo for “X” related to “online social networking services” and “social networking services in the fields of entertainment, gaming, and app development” – essentially the same business as Twitter.

A $30 logo that will be a lot of trouble

The “X” logo in Meta’s trademark registration application is different from the one Musk put on Twitter’s website.

Meta’s “X” appears as two arrows with rounded ends pointing inward, one white and one blue, while Twitter’s “X” is an angular representation in black and white.

However, Twitter might encounter some obstacles as it intends to use its X for social networking purposes, similar to what is indicated in Meta’s documents.

Trademark registrations also gain more value and protection the longer they are used, according to Gerben, which means that Musk’s new logo is vulnerable to potential lawsuits and claims from Meta.

We don’t know if Mark Zuckerberg will get involved in this mess, especially with Threads already operational in many countries worldwide, but it’s clear that Elon Musk hasn’t put much thought into this change of direction for what was, until a year ago, the most beloved social media platform by users.

By the way, what do we call tweets now that the social media platform has changed its name? Here’s the answer.
