WHAT’S THE MEANING
A Torrent is a file sent via the BitTorrent protocol. According to an article from The Technology Bay, Torrenting is when two computers or more share files over a peer to peer network. Basically, the computers send data to and one from another.
DID YOU KNOW
Did you know that the Bram Cohen, the inventor of torrenting ( or the peer-to-peer distribution of files) used free pornography to lure free beta testers to his program? Cohen, 42, has made it publicly known that in 2001, after coding the protocol, he used free porn to lure free beta testers for his fledgling software. Aside from those who wanted free porn, Cohen’s protocol was also used by those who wanted to share television series and programs for Linux computers.
Because it is a way to share movies, songs, television shows, or any file for that matter, BitTorrent naturally became a threat to the entertainment industry. A 2018 study Digital TV Research group showed that piracy caused by torrenting sites like the Pirate Bay and Kickass Torrents cost the industry more than $31.8 billion in revenue in 2017. Despite the huge damage inflicted to the industry, torrent inventor Cohen insists that he is innocent because he never used his own program to download illegal content because he knows he will be incarcerated for it.
