    DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that the term “survival horror” was first used for the original Japanese release of Resident Evil in 1996 by Capcom? This term has been used since then for games with similar themes and gameplay and has been applied to earlier titles and games. Resident Evil revolutionized the survival aspect of the genre used in video games by focusing on the emotions and experiences brought about whilst playing it. The constant feeling of dread, helplessness, and the gripping worry that something around the corner would jump out in an instant and result in you seeing the “game over” screen brought players to the edge of their seats during the majority of their playthrough.

Another game that used the same aspect was Silent Hill, albeit with a few additions that made the experience more surreal. With an estimated budget of $3-5 million, the game brought players to an abandoned town plagued with disturbing creatures, immersing them in its narrative story and psychological horror elements, thus making it a classic amongst fans within the genre. According to some, the huge difference between horror video games and horror in other media is interactive engagement. Giving players full control of the characters in horror games lets them experience the situations firsthand, essentially making them feel as if they’re inside the game itself. With plenty of horror games available to play in various platforms, and more still in development and showing new and improved elements, it’s safe to say that gamers will be encountering more of this genre in the years to come.

The story was kind of vague and boring. It was also a little short and did not offer a ton of replayability. Something like a survival horror game might be a better value, because you can play it more than one time while continuing to be satisfied because it draws from other genres that emphasize skill and action over a narrative."

"First off, the visuals in this game are simply amazing. But for as great as it looks, the game itself is rather disappointing. The game play is based on exploration, however the exploration is very linear. And the the overall quality of the story was underwhelming. Also, the game itself was relatively short and can be completed in a single, long session. Visually appealing, but ultimately not worth the price of admission for this game."

"I've been debating back and forth about what my favorite horror game is. It's such a hard decision because there are so many to choose from. I think I narrowed it down and I have to say Resident Evil 5 is definitely my personal favorite simply for the ability to play with my friends. I think a lot of people might mention Biohazard and various other games but there's something about Resident Evil 5 that really had me on the edge of my seat. I think I was really into the story line as well as the game play. Some will say that this is close to Resident Evil 4, but I think the new look in the graphics, as well as other improvements, really sets itself apart. That is probably another reason why I think this one is the best horror games, at least for me. This game is a must for multi-playing though. I will admit the team AI in this game isn't the best, it's sometimes frustrating, but it's great when you let others join in. Just make sure you're letting the right people in though! There's a lot of action in this game. Speaking of which, I'm going to go back in and take out Wesker again!"

There were little details that I missed the first few run throughs. The game has many peek-a-boo and gotcha moments that had me falling off the edge of my seat. I had to turn down the volume of my computer at certain points of the game so that I wouldn't freak my self out while going through the story line. There were moments when I could feel my heart beating faster and my palms sweating due to anticipation of something scary happening or something that already happened that I hadn't gotten over yet."

I downloaded it and, boy, were they right! It's a super scary game. The graphics are amazing (some of the best I've seen) and the atmosphere of the game is so creepy. Not to mention the cool story... which really gets creepy at several points. I really have been enjoying the game and I think you will too if you love horror games. Give it a shot!"

This is the real stuff and it will hijack your brain and get you addicted. I'm not lying, it's actually really hard for me to stop playing to do something else right now. They really kept the great core of the game while adding a lot of amazing new elements. It reacts well and fast, it takes you places (scary places that is) and the stories are very very good. Don't miss out on this!"

"Resident Evil 5 and the other newer games in the series have drifted a bit from what the original games were about - the horror elements have kind of been downplayed. Now there's more focus on action and quick time events. The latter elements demonstrate, to me, fairly lazy design - scripted sequences of button pushing really don't build tension that well. This game still holds up fairly well against its peers, I guess I am mostly just dissatisfied with the direction the industry as a whole is taking."

"Resident Evil 5 is generally fun, though the series has been kind of moving away from the more horror-centric and atmospheric gameplay of its earlier years. Overall, this game seems slightly inferior to its predecessor, Resident Evil 4. If you are attached to the horror themes of the first few games, you might not like the direction that the newer games are taken, but you'll probably appreciate this game more if you just like the general cast of characters from the earlier games."

The graphics are amazing, but the gameplay feels recycled from Resident Evil 4, which isn’t a terrible thing, but a tad disappointing. South Africa's always had a sort of white supremacist in the jungle vibe for me, especially with all the torches. At the end of the day, though, it's about the zombies. My only nitpick is that they labeled the 7th game 5. What, do they think gamers can't count? It's not like we're a bunch of llamas or something."

"Played Observer with my friend, who by the way was very excited about the game, and we both were pretty disappointed. The graphics and the overall cyberpunk atmosphere of the game are awesome, but the gameplay just couldn't keep me interested."
