World of Warships
DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that the term “survival horror” was first used for the original Japanese release of Resident Evil in 1996 by Capcom? This term has been used since then for games with similar themes and gameplay and has been applied to earlier titles and games. Resident Evil revolutionized the survival aspect of the genre used in video games by focusing on the emotions and experiences brought about whilst playing it. The constant feeling of dread, helplessness, and the gripping worry that something around the corner would jump out in an instant and result in you seeing the “game over” screen brought players to the edge of their seats during the majority of their playthrough.
Another game that used the same aspect was Silent Hill, albeit with a few additions that made the experience more surreal. With an estimated budget of $3-5 million, the game brought players to an abandoned town plagued with disturbing creatures, immersing them in its narrative story and psychological horror elements, thus making it a classic amongst fans within the genre. According to some, the huge difference between horror video games and horror in other media is interactive engagement. Giving players full control of the characters in horror games lets them experience the situations firsthand, essentially making them feel as if they’re inside the game itself. With plenty of horror games available to play in various platforms, and more still in development and showing new and improved elements, it’s safe to say that gamers will be encountering more of this genre in the years to come.
