Did you know that Hollywood actor Anthony Hopkins studied files of serial killers in preparation for his role in the 1991 film adaptation, The Silence of the Lambs? Directed by Jonathan Demme, The Silence of the Lambs is based on the novel of the same name written by Thomas Harris. It is an American horror-thriller film that tells a story of a young F.B.I. cadet named Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) who seeks help from an incarcerated and manipulative serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) in order to catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims. The movie was released on February 14, 1991, and gained a cumulative worldwide gross of $272,742,922 against its $19,000,000 budget.

The Silence of the Lambs became the third film to ever win all of the "big five" Oscars awards: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Adapted Screenplay in the 1992 Academy Awards. According to Wikipedia, It is also the first (and so far only) Best Picture winner widely considered to be a horror film, and only the third such film to be nominated in the category, after The Exorcist in 1973 and Jaws in 1975. A sequel titled "Hannibal" was released in 2001, in which Hopkins reprised his role. It was then followed by two prequels: Red Dragon (2002) and Hannibal Rising (2007).
