Did you know that prior to 1947, LEGO were made of wood? The Lego franchise began in the workshop of Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter from Billund, Denmark. He began making wooden toys in 1932. LEGO started making toys like yo-yos, trucks and sucks on wheels before focusing on its current brand. By the late 1940s, LEGO would switch to a form of plastic called cellulose acetate. These bricks are called “automated binding bricks” which serve as the precursor of today’s LEGO bricks. Today, LEGO bricks are made from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, or ABS plastic. Compared to other materials, this plastic is less toxic and is more heat resistant.

LEGO has continuously adapted to the evolution of childhood playtime. As the shift of childhood attention turns into video games and screens, the task for LEGO is to remain relevant. Just for the first half of the year 2017, LEGO laid off 1,400 employees. This is about eight percent of its 18,200-person global workforce. Today, the LEGO franchise has been available for children to play on different gaming platforms. Lego PS4 games, XBox games and others are a huge attraction to the young and not-so young gamers. The younger generations can now play LEGO on their video games. These games feature collaborations with the likes of Jurassic World and Marvel Superheroes. This is proof that LEGO continues to adapt to today's childhood playtime.
