The cassette tape or simply cassette or tape was first released in 1963. It was released by Koninklijke Philips N.V. a multinational technology company. Philips invented the compact cassette originally for audio storage. It was introduced in Europe at the Berlin Radio Show on August 30, 1963, and the following year, 1964, introduced in the United States. Compact cassettes can either be a pre-recorded one with content or as a recordable or blank cassette. The first cassette players were designed for car dashboards. The cassette alongside with the LP recorder followed by the CD or compact disk was the most common forms of pre-recorded music. 

After cassette’s peak in the late 1980’s, its market showed a noticeable decline particularly in Western Europe and Northern America. In the early 1990’s CDs have overtaken the sales of cassettes. This decline continued and by 2011, cassettes are only responsible for 4% of music sales. In the 1990’s Cassettes maintained its popularity in car audio and telephone answering machines. Though most people now prefer digital recorders, cassettes are still produced in some countries because of its durability and sometimes for its sentimental value. According to Jonathan Wells of The Telegraph, tapes will always mean a lot to a certain demographic, for people who grew up with cassettes and cassette decks. There may be a nostalgic value.
