Did you know that during World War I, tanks were categorized according to their “gender”, wherein male tanks had cannons and female tanks had machine guns? During the course of World War I, tanks first appeared at the Battle of Flers-Courcelette in September 1916, marking it as the first time these type of machinery have been used in a military conflict. The development of tanks was deemed a necessity by the British, sending 49 into battle to increase mobility on the Western Front and eventually breaking the stalemate of trench warfare.

In the final few months of World War I, the Allied forces were able to deploy tanks en masse, as their pioneers had envisioned, with thousands fighting in the big breakthrough battles from August 1918 until the end of the war. By 1918, Britain and France had produced a total of 6,506 tanks, completely shadowing Germany’s mere 20 produced tanks. Although Germany had developed effective tactics to combat the tank onslaught with armor-piercing rounds from artillery, it wasn’t enough to halt the overwhelming force, leading to their surrender.

The success of the tanks eventually made the world see their importance, bringing about products, merchandises, toys, and games that feature tank warfare.
