WHAT’S THE MEANING

The PlayStation Camera is a peripheral accessory for the PlayStation 4. First released in 2013 with the PlayStation 4, it followed the PlayStation Eye for the PS3. The PlayStation Camera is now an essential part of VR gaming on PlayStation consoles. It has two cameras for depth perception and motion sensing, as well as a 4-channel microphone array. Released in 2016, a new model of the camera, featuring a new cylindrical design with the same features.

In 2014, Sony had a supply shortage for the PlayStation Camera, as the demand far exceeded the supply. With 900,000 units sold, the PlayStation Camera has a 15% attach rate to the console, which sold 6 million units since its release until 2014. At present, Sony has sold over 70 million units of the PS4 worldwide. Upon its release, there was not much use for the PS Camera, as there weren’t any camera games available to play on the PlayStation that used the accessory in an essential way. The fact that it was a cheaper alternative to XBox Kinect boosted the sales of the PS Camera. Xbox Kinect is the new, built-in game called Playroom was only playable with a PS Camera, and that Sony was planning to use the PS Camera for their VR system. The release of the PlayStation VR in 2016 only served to improve sales, because the PS Camera is connected to VR gaming, as it used to track head movement using LED lights.
