Did you know that attempts to launch color television started during the 1950s despite experiments for it being conducted at the same time during the development of commercial black and white television way back in the 1880s? A huge improvement to the monochrome black and white television which only displayed grayscale pictures, a practical demonstration of mechanically-scanned color television was given by John Logie Baird in 1928, but the limitations of the system made it impossible to produce. In August 1944, Baird gave the world’s first demonstration of a practical fully electronic color television display. Meanwhile, in the United States of America, color standards that were commercially competing were developed, resulting in the NTSC standard for color that retained its compatibility with the previous monochrome system. It was not until the early 1970s that color TV in the USA outsold black and white monochrome units, despite the NTSC color standard being proclaimed in 1953.

The first commercial color broadcast was aired on June 25, 1951, when CBS offered an hour-long program titled Premiere. After the switch from black and white to color television, most programs and shows that have been previously shown in grayscale were now promoted as “In Color!” and promotional spots often mentioned the color status.
