Working in Spain and being of English tongue I often get caught short when out shopping, in a restaurant or chatting with friends. Rather than investing in a pocket translator I decided to give the IdioMaX Mobile Translator a go on my mobile phone.

The program is a powerful language tool that provides a complete environment for translating word, phrases or even conjugating verbs in five different languages, namely: English, French, German, Spanish and Italian.

The interface is neatly laid-out and has preset options for translating between two particular languages, meaning you just need enter the word or phrase you want to translate then select the corresponding translation. I found the accuracy of the translation very good and it's certainly much better than most of the web-based translators out there.

I would've liked to see phonetic notation to help with pronunciation but on the whole, IdiomaX Mobile Translator provides an effective way of deciphering foreign languages while you're out and about.

Being a keen photographer I love messing around with pictures on my computer. In fact, sometimes I wish I didn't have to wait until I got home before I tinker around with them to make something creative. Hang on, what's that? I don't have to wait until I get home because Pocket Artist lets me edit graphics on the move? Now this I've got to see.

Sure enough, this software allows you to manipulate images on your Pocket PC, supporting all the major graphics formats, including JPG, PNG, GIG, BMP and PSD. Once you've installed the program using the Windows Installer and loaded an image the creative world is your oyster thanks to the bevy of tools on offer here.

Pocket Artist's user environment is fairly similar to the one you'll see in the popular desktop-based graphics packages, if slimmed down somewhat. There are only eight icons on the toolbar for stuff like drawing tools, shape selection, fill and stroke colour and brush style and size.

What's more, there are dozens more tools locked within the pop-up menu system accessible from the bottom of the interface. Here you can do things like apply filters to images, zoom in and out of the image, rotate and transform, and adjust colour/brightness etc. The fact that Pocket Artist also lets you work with layers demonstrates exactly how powerful this program is, and you have enough tools at your disposal to create some truly impressive imagery.

The problem lies in the fact that the tools aren't as easily accessible as they could be and because there are no floating palettes or extended toolbars like you'll find on the big screen graphics apps, you'll need to do a lot more hunting around for the features you need. Nevertheless, considering the size limitations of a mobile screen, the app does well to put as much as it does on display without looking cluttered.

Even if you're a high-end digital photographer or designer you'll be impressed by exactly how many powerful editing tools Pocket Artist contains.

News nowadays is such a disposable commodity that you can tap into the latest current affairs from your seat on the bus using your mobile. Unless you want to wade through countless news sites on your device, which as you'll know, can take some time, the best way to access news on the go is to use an RSS reader.

NewsCopier Pro is an advanced RSS news client containing all the resources you need to access multiple channels of news and download the latest content. This isn't your bog-standard feed reader though, and the app contains a range of other neat features, such as the ability to connect to password-protected channels, download images as headlines, view stories offline and even play podcasts.

The software supports WiFi connections and is compatible with most versions of RSS, namely: 0.9, 0.91, 0.92, 2.0 and Atom. My only criticism of NewsCopier would be that the list of feeds in the preset channels is a little light, but adding your own is so easy that this is only a minor concern.

If you demand more from an RSS client then you should find NewCopier a very worthy addition to your Pocket PC software arsenal.

I don't know about you but I've realised in the past few weeks that if I don't get myself organised I just end up wasting my day getting dressed, looking for my keys, brushing my teeth and making a sandwich, by which stage it's time to go to bed. I've tried a number of planners, calendars, diaries etc but still I'm a mess. Let me tell you, I am now ready to get serious, which is why I'm glad to have found myTime Easy.

The software allows you to plan all activities in your life - work, rest and play - displaying all in a presentable calendar form. Highlight your precious time of the day in white and edit all entries adding as much or little extra information as you wish. You can also export data as XML and Excel onto your PC meaning that finally you might get some control of your life. However, what I can't find are the alarms I need to remind me when something important is happening. Without alarms, I'm afraid I have little chance of doing anything.

I've lost count of the number of times I've lost my mobiles over the years so it's a good job I don't have any big secrets, bank codes or money in my bank because if there was any confidential information on my phone I would have said goodbye to it by now. However, mobile security software packages can often seem either too complicated to use or require more passwords that I can create or remember. SecuBox promises tight security while being simple to use.

The software works by creating a secure folder for all your confidential files, protected with 'unbreakable industry standard' Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 256-bit encryption. Enough encryption for you? Whereas many of these programmes can slow your mobile down SecuBox doesn't.

Whenever you mount the storage on your mobile, SecuBox asks you for your password. Once you enter the password, the secure storage card is mounted and you are able to access the encrypted data on your PDA. Without the password, the sensitive data on your Pocket PC is unaccessible. The good news is as administrator you set the procedures of recovery should you forget your password. The software also now allows file wiping of sensitive files using secure storage deletion so even if you wanted to, you'll never get them back.

Ever wished you could speed up the way your Pocket PC operates? Fed up with trawling through the Start menu to access programs or files? Well, this is your lucky day because Pocket Launcher can help you in both these departments.

The program brings a little more order to the Today screen, providing you with quick access to often-used applications and files from a series of tabs at the bottom of the screen. Each tab is formed of an icon relating to a category such as Games, Tasks, Apps and Docs.

The installation process involves Pocket Launcher sifting through your programs and shortcuts to ensure that everything is correctly formed, so this can take a while. However, the program does include a comprehensive guide to setting up the program and managing its options.

Talking of options, there are plenty to play around with, such as customisable tabs, behavours and Gizmos. Be careful when you're editing the tabs that you don't make the icons too big because they're actually pretty ugly when viewed in large format - this is a world away from the Mac OS Dock.

Nevertheless, if you want a simple way of getting quicker access to your files and documents on Windows Mobile, Pocket Launcher is a decent solution.

When first run, Spb Wallet asks you to create your first encrypted wallet file. This stage includes a password strength test which will warn you if your password looks like it's too simple. Next, you're presented with a list of categories for data storage, headed by a very handy 'About Spb Wallet' section. This area contains a lot of guidance on how to use the program, template creation and more.

The number of categories and templates available is impressive enough, and that's before you factor-in the easy-to-use template creation tool. Most of the templates also have smart little icons - and again, you're allowed to create and import your own if you want.
