The program, named after the website of the same name, allows you to check the current weather anywhere in the World, from a huge database of towns and cities. AccuWeather displays the current conditions and the temperature in centigrade or Fahrenheit, depending on your preference. The AccuWeather.com app also shows you the current humidity, pressure, wind measurement and the ‘RealFeel’.

The AccuWeather app also boasts hourly and 15-day forecasts, showing the maximum, and minimum temperatures and the general outlook. There’s an Indexes section too, which gives you information about the current UV and air quality indexes.

AccuWeather includes a Radar feature, which lets you view satellite images of current cloud activity around the World. Hit the Play button and you’ll be able to see the movement of the cloud cover. Unfortunately the Radar interface is a bit lame, and you can only the area around your currently-selected location.

If you want even more information about the weather then you can choose to tune into the video section, where you can view forecasts from the AccuWeather.com service.

In general, AccuWeather is very easy to use thanks to a well-ordered user interface that displays all of the options in a taskbar at the bottom of the screen. In fact, the only thing we could fault AccuWeather on is that it doesn’t auto-predict locations as you type. Note too, that the Alert feature, which gives you weather warnings and watches, is only available within the US.

The app detects your current location and displays toilets in the vicinity, in both map and list formats. Click on one of the toilets and Toilet Finder will give you more details about the facilities, including the distance, disabled access information, and an overall rating based on feedback from users who have been there. Annoyingly, Toilet Finder doesn't include a search feature. This means a lot of map scrolling, if you're trying to find toilets a bit further afield.

The database of amenities in the Toilet Finder app is far from complete, and the developer has a lot of work to do to for the app to become a comprehensive reference for toilets in all areas. That said, there is a feature for reporting a toilet, so with user power the number of WCs covered should improve.

Toilet Finder also includes a news section, where you can view photos of great toilets from around the world, which is worth having a flick through (perhaps even to pass some time while you're in the toilet!)

Toilet Finder is a handy travel tool to stop you getting caught short while you're out and about. It does need more bathrooms adding, though.

Looking up the weather can be a bit boring but what if you could look at cute puppies at the same time? Weather Puppy lets you do this while providing some useful weather information.

Weather Puppy is a simple application to use and works much like the stock weather app on iOS. There aren't very many options to configure. You can add multiple cities and rearrange them in the order you want. Temperatures can be toggled between Fahrenheit and Celsius.

You'll spend most of your time looking at the home page of Weather Puppy, which displays a 4 day forecast with today's conditions shown to the left. Tap on any of the days to reveal more information like when sunrise and sunset are.

What Weather Puppy is missing are news stories about the weather and notifications. It'd be nice to view weather related stories inside the app. There are also no photos or videos in Weather Puppy. The app is strictly for quickly glancing at current and upcoming weather conditions. Users who want more information will want to check out the AccuWeather app instead.

Weather Puppy also tries its best to make you purchase more puppy photos via an in-app purchase. Weather Puppy has partnered with 13 non-profit animal shelters but doesn't mention if proceeds from sales will be shared with these shelters. While the picture packs are cheap, it would have been nice to see Weather Puppy include more free puppy pictures. Dog owners can also make their own puppies the star of their weather app, creating a custom experience for users.

Weather Puppy is only useful for glancing quickly at weather conditions but users wanting more information will want to look elsewhere.

The bigger brother of the Weather Channel app for iPhone, The Weather Channel Max for iPad provides in-depth weather reports, live map radars, and a huge collection of free videos from the The Weather Channel. It’s all presented in a stunning full-screen interface, with a beautiful start page that features a weather phenomenon. Navigating The Weather Channel Max for iPad app is done using icons at the bottom of the screen.

The Maps section of The Weather Channel Max for iPad allows you to get a near real time view of the weather over your area (or any area in the World, for that matter). Radar images are layered over the map and you can select to view the type of weather image you want to see, such as clouds, rain, temperature, UV, etc. It’s a lovely idea but unfortunately this feature is very poorly executed in The Weather Channel Max. The radar images take an age to load, if at all, and the pinch to zoom feature of the maps feels clunky and imprecise. It’s a shame because otherwise this would be a very useful tool.

Checking the forecast

Hit the Local icon in The Weather Channel Max for iPad and you’ll access the current forecast for your area. Again, this information is crystal clear at full screen resolution, displaying the conditions right now, for the next 36 hours and for the next 10 days. Underneath this information, The Weather Channel Max includes more relevant sections, which you can flick through with your finger.

The Weather Channel Max for iPad is rammed full of free videos from the channel. These aren’t just forecasts either, and you get clips about weather news, storm videos and full-length TV features. It looks nice, and videos can be viewed full screen, but again this is very buggy and sometimes the clips take forever to load.

The Social section of The Weather Channel Max for iPad is also worth checking out, providing the latest tweets from the people behind The Weather Channel.

A bright outlook?

The Weather Channel Max for iPad has the potential to be a must-have app. However, the execution of the application lets it down badly. Aside from the glitches I’ve already mentioned, the icons are very unresponsive to touch, and sometimes the app seems to have a mind of its own.

Surely these bugs will be ironed out over time, and once they are, The Weather Channel Max for iPad will be an indispensable tool to check the weather on your iPad.

Useful for drivers in the United States and Canada, GasBuddy uses the location of the iOS device to collect user-submitted gasoline prices.

Separated into the different types of gasoline, GasBuddy can show both a list and Google Maps of the locations of the gas stations. The service is dependent on gas price submittal by users, but the prices are updated consistently.

It is easy to see the difference between the prices of gas stations. Signing into GasBuddy allows users to input gas prices and gain points. The app is very useful when in unfamiliar areas or when you are looking for the cheapest gas in the specific area.

Simple and effective, GasBuddy is an excellent tool for commuters.

Formula 1 Racing Live 2010 features a slick homepage, with an animated countdown timer to the next race, news headlines, plus current classifications. The standings are illustrated with the cars themselves, and you can scroll through them by swiping your finger.

Each race features a circuit map, qualifying and race results. Everything is updated in real time, so you can follow events as they happen. The results page simply features the driver and team standings, and isn't interactive. The news screen is updated regularly, and has tons of stories as well as a picture slideshow to watch.

Formula 1 Racing Live 2010 is a simple way to keep up with news and races when you can't watch them, although it's missing the in-depth telemetry that would make it an interesting app to run while watching a race.

Packed with clever features

Obviously, Yellow Line Parking's main aim is to help you find a parking space. In a city beset by parking restrictions, congestion zones and a whole lot of people, a little help is virtually essential.

To achieve this, Yellow Line Parking offers a number of different options. It's integrated with Google Maps and uses your phone's geolocation features, so it knows exactly where you're looking.

Once it has identified your location, it lets you know the status of the kerb around you, informing you of restrictions, road markings, time limits and more. You can also search a theoretical time and location in the future, so you can plan ahead.

Yellow Line Parking has more nice features once you've parked your car. You can mark it on the map and then set an alarm, so your phone can warn you when your time is up or your meter is running out. It will also provide a variety of routes to get back to your car, so when it's time to go, you won't waste time looking on the wrong road.

This app is also packed with other features designed to make London parking a little less terrifying. Thre are parking tips, golden rules, explanation of parking laws, and a borough-by-borough rundown of parking regulations. These (and the options) aren't yet complete, but there is plenty of information in there as things stand, and when it's finished, it's going to be a humdinger.

You'll soon get the hang of it

Yellow Line Parking looks a bit chaotic when you open it first, but it won't take long to get a hang of all the icons and buttons. Bear in mind that as well as the map, clicking on the icon in the upper left corner will take you to the Alarm, Borough Info, Golden Rules and more.

If we're being strict, we found Yellow Line Parking's controls to be a little imprecise. You sometimes have to press or swipe several times to elict a reaction. We also noticed that upon exiting a menu, the app threw us back to our current location, which was not where we were looking for spaces. On the move, this won't be a problem, but it you're trying to plan ahead, it could get irritating.

Decent quality that could be improved

This app is pretty good, and everything works more or less how it should. As we mentioned above, however, we thought some areas of the app were a little shoddy, with menus that looked odd-sized and controls that didn't respond quickly. We're confident that these are teething problems though, and are pretty sure that future versions will be much smoother.

An awesome app that could get even better

Yellow Line Parking is the kind of app that doesn't come around very often. It's useful, well-planned, packed with features and easy to use. Even if you only occasionally drive in London, you should install Yellow Line Parking, and if you drive frequently, well, frankly we're impressed that you've survived this long without it!

A location-based app, Foodspotting allows users to take pictures of the food that they are eating, give a quick review, and post it to Foodspotting for others to view and comment on. Rather than comment on the restaurant itself or service, Foodspotting is focused on the food of a restaurant.

Foodspotting uses location services to locate the area the user is in and load reviews of nearby food. If there is a specific type of food that users want to look up, it only takes a few seconds for Foodspotting to pull relevant reviews.

The interface is straight forward and easy to use. The separate tabs guide users to the search or latest reviews easily. The continuously growing user base will assist in adding more dishes and reviews for unknown places.

The app works well because of the location related focus. Rather than offer food that might be halfway across a city, it will post relevant reviews and show the closest places possible. Foodspotting is a great app for constant travelers who might want a particular type of food, but are not aware of what the best dish at a restaurant is.

The only issue with Foodspotting is based on the location service that the app relies on. Sometime it may not locate the exact location of the device and show review locations that are far away.

While Uber is only available in select cities, the service allows you to request a car directly without having to wait for a cab. The app allows you to enter your final destination and estimate the fare so you know what you will have to pay.

Since payments are completed through the app, you complete the entire fare on your iPhone. With this integration, it is important that you have service to pay for the fare when you've arrived. Uber is different from hailing a cab because it removes the need to wait for a cab that may or may not show up. Uber also lets you know the time until the car arrives so you do not have to wait outside.

Uber is a great alternative to trying to wave down a cab.

Perfect for anyone who travels a lot or gets lost in unfamiliar places, MetrO is a competent app that contains to and from directions on a number subway systems in the world's most popular cities. Just type in the name of your starting and ending points, and MetrO will give you directions on the nearest public transportation systems. There is also a version available for Windows Mobile and Symbian users.

It's really simple to choose directions with MetrO. The metro systems are listed by line and often have individual stops nested within lines to get you even closer to your exact destination point.

In addition to subway stations and bus stops, MetrO has references to street names and even popular tourist attractions for sightseeing purposes. You can also search by location and street name, making the list of locations in the MetrO database quite varied.

MetrO is also constantly being updated, so the database for each city never gets outdated. There's really no excuse for accidentally getting lost with this app in hand. The only real frustration that comes from this app is that sometimes the directions are relatively vague. There are times when it will tell you how to get to a bus line but not tell you the number, letter, or name on the bus, which might cause some confusion. Other cities that have pretty famous metro lines only have street and traditional public transportation by bus directions, which can make them a little unhelpful if you'd rather take the subway.

Frequent travelers would be well-advised not to leave home without MetrO installed on their mobile device.

The free Urbanspoon app allows you to explore all of the restaurants in your city at the same time, from a convenient user interface. The application can detect your current location, or you can browse to one of the cities covered by the Urbanspoon network. A large, zoomable map from Google Maps displays all of the restaurants in the area.

The best thing about Urbanspoon for iPad is the way it lets you filter results depending on the kind of restaurant you feel like going to. A trio of slot machine-style wheels at the top of the interface allows you to select the neighborhood, type of food, and the price range. You simply spin the wheels to your preference and the matching results are shown on the map, or in List format. Alternatively, you can use the Spin button in the Urbanspoon app, which will randomize the wheels. This is great for picking a place at random if you have no clue as to where you want to go. While the filtering system is very handy, I wish Urbanspoon had included some more search variables, along with an 'any' option for each variable.

Once you've found a restaurant you like the look of, you can click on its name to reveal further details about it, garnered from the Urbanspoon database. Here you can view menus, user reviews, and check the overall score of the restaurant based on user ratings.

Urbanspoon is great for finding restaurants in US towns and cities, but global coverage isn't quite so good. For Canada, UK and Australia only the capital city and a few major towns are covered by the Urbanspoon app. And all other countries aren't touched by the app at all, unfortunately.

Unless you live somewhere that isn't covered, Urbanspoon for iPad makes for a great way to find new places to eat in your area.

The app is very simple. Users answer questions from Alfred about preferences to eat and enjoy nights out. As it collates the information, Alfred suggests places depending on the location of the user.

Alfred does require some initial setup with the first set of questions. The first set of suggestions is close to the user preferences, but they are not as focused and rely on general preferences. As users continue to answer questions, the app becomes much more specific and precise, suggesting excellent locations based on what type of food is desired.

Alfred also includes overall filters that specify suggestions for any circumstance. Beyond food preferences, Alfred can also filter by requests like free Wi-Fi, dietary restrictions, and price range.

The app continues to improve the more it is used and that relies on the amount of questions the user answers. Alfred also allows users to connect through Facebook and will compare preferences of friends who also use the application.

Alfred is a great tool for finding food choices that fit personal preference.
