In the past, the sequels of Disney movies went straight to VHS/DVD, where they had a home market for the very fans but left the big screen for new releases. However, this trend has not only changed but has reversed, and now it is much more common to see Disney sequels and remakes than new original films.

However, on some occasions, this old trend wouldn’t be out of place, and Moana 2, as critics make clear, is nowhere near the level of the original movie. With 69% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, the general opinion is that it’s not terrible, but it falls far short of the magic we saw in 2016.

Nothing new under the pacific sun

Below we leave you some excerpts from the reviews that have come out about Moana 2:

A disorganized, messy, and low-stakes story; disappointing songs that unsuccessfully mimic the masterful melodies of the first; forgettable new characters. It feels like a direct-to-video sequel from the 2000s… The beautiful animation is the only positive point” – Dave Lee

The modern equivalent of those mid-tier Disney Straight-To-Home Video sequels from the 2000s: a repeat of what came before with little to offer beyond the die-hard fans” – Flickering Myth

“Moana remains a great character, clever and self-sufficient, but still prone to stumbling, and her dynamic with Maui is once again a joy, even if it is toned down compared to the sarcastic play of the first movie” – Phil de Semlyen, Time Out

“In a story that incorporates a lot of new characters. It’s hard to shake the feeling that Moana 2 got caught in the crosswinds, too swept up between the studio’s changing imperatives to really find its own path” – Jake Coyle, AP News
