Millions were left heartbroken when Google announced it was shutting down Google Reader back in March. The chop comes on July 1st, and as the date draws near, people continue to flounder around, desperately seeking a replacement. There could be light around the corner, however, and it’s shining from an unusual source. Facebook may be planning to release an RSS reader.
The social network is planning an event for June 20, and rumors are hotting up that the main announcement could be that Facebook are designing an RSS reader in an attempt to scoop up some of the displaced Google Reader diaspora. Although the invitation to the event doesn’t give away much, an eagle-eyed developer has spotted some information in Facebook code that might give away their intentions.
As UK website The Register point out, Facebook launching an RSS reader would fit in nicely with their plans to be a one-stop shop for people who want to know what’s happening on the internet. If it is the real purpose of the event, we’ll soon find out, and if you’re looking for a Google Reader replacement, check out Softonic’s RSS reader reviews to find the perfect one for you.
