A plastic Apple Watch? Apple is considering it

Apple could be considering a very significant change in the design of the Apple Watch SE. According to the latest revelations from Mark Gurman in his newsletter Power On, the next generation of the Apple Watch SE could abandon its aluminum casing in favor of one made of rigid plastic.

Cheaper, but also lighter

The Apple Watch SE, last updated in 2022, has maintained the same aesthetic as the rest of the models, using aluminum in its construction. In its latest version, Apple made a change in the material of the back case, replacing ceramic with a “nylon composite”. An indication of a shift to plastic that could be a strategy to further reduce production costs.

The reason behind this possible decision would be clear: to reduce costs to make the device even more interesting. In addition, it would have another advantage, and this is its reduced weight. Although the news has not yet been officially confirmed by Apple, the mere possibility of a plastic Apple Watch has caught attention.

Apple could reduce the entry price to the ecosystem or, on the contrary, manage to place more and better technology inside the watch. A lower price on its chassis could lead to an improved screen or more health-related sensors.

While the Apple Watch Series 10 could be even bigger, Apple’s strategy is still to be seen, and the decision is far from confirmed, but this radical change in Apple’s strategy could mark a really interesting moment in the evolution of the Apple Watch. A lighter, cheaper and/or more capable Apple Watch with which Apple could surprise us this fall alongside the release of iOS 18.
