It seems inevitable that passkeys will eventually become integrated into our routine when accessing certain platforms. In that sense, Meta recently announced that WhatsApp has started using this new security standard, one that aims to eliminate passwords, at least as we know them today. Even more recently, Amazon has joined this new trend and now allows access to its accounts using the mentioned new method.
As several media outlets have already reported, the web version of Amazon has started receiving passkeys so that users can configure this method as their new way of accessing the platform. It appears that by accessing the account information section and navigating to the login and security part, users can quickly and easily activate this secure method as a new configuration.
Passkeys have come to stay
Moreover, several media outlets have already indicated that we will be able to use Passkeys on various different devices, which is quite logical considering that this new method is based on biometrics. However, this new way of accessing Amazon does not apply to other services of the technology company, as it has been stated that it cannot be used for accessing Amazon Shopping or Prime Video for now, even if we have configured it previously from the web store. Therefore, for the mentioned two services of Jeff Bezos’ company, we will still have to enter the password whenever necessary, of course.
In fact, besides continuing to enter the password for the mentioned services, we also have to enter two-step verification codes, although this could be temporary. However, we will see if Passkeys are eventually implemented on Prime Video and Amazon Shopping, and if they do, it remains to be seen if they will still require us to enter the two-step verification code. Using passwords and these codes is indeed quite redundant at this point.
Nevertheless, it is highly likely that as the use of Passkeys to access Amazon and other platforms becomes more widespread, we may still have to enter a two-step verification code as well, considering that extra security is always welcome. In a statement shared with the media outlet TechCrunch, Amazon has stated that they are “in the early stages of adding support for passkey on Amazon.com” and will have “more to share soon.” Therefore, we can expect updates soon.
With these Passkeys, as we mentioned, the first steps are taken to replace traditional passwords with our biometric data, whether it’s our fingerprint or face, in addition to using a PIN. With this new method, hackers will now find it much more difficult to steal our login credentials.
