Science-fiction cinema is one of the most successful genres today. Although not many projects in this genre are released each year, when a high-quality film emerges, it becomes a box-office success, and likewise with sci-fi/horror series. Thanks to streaming platforms, some movies that didn’t make a big impact at the time of their debut can receive a new life. This was the case with The Lair, a Neil Marshall film that was a big failure at its premiere.
Premiering during the pandemic, La Guarida (The Lair) had a very poor box-office performance and received quite low reviews. However, it remains a very interesting exercise in sci-fi, and now it’s getting a new opportunity, thanks to Amazon Prime Video. Filled with alien technology, action, and mystery, it is a little gem worth discovering.

An unknown gem worth discovering
As indicated in The Lair’s synopsis: “On her last mission in Afghanistan, Kate, an RAF pilot, gets injured. To escape from her pursuers, she takes refuge in a bunker that was previously used by the Russians to experiment with alien DNA. The battle between soldiers and mutant monsters is underway.” It’s clear the movie doesn’t hold back, and this is only the premise of an even crazier plot.

Starring Charlotte Kirk, Jonathan Howard, Jamie Bamber, and Tanji Kibong, The Lair is a little-known film that’s worth discovering. Neil Marshall, known primarily for his work on Game of Thrones and Westworld, brings out all the potential we could already see in the not insignificant Hellboy of 2019. Certainly, The Lair deserves much more than it’s been given in recent years.
