This has been the largest DDoS attack of 2025: What happened?

A major cybersecurity incident has just been recorded: the largest DDoS attack of 2025 so far. Qrator Labs successfully mitigated the strike, which targeted an online betting platform during a major NHL event. The attack unfolded over 90 minutes, showcasing the evolving threat landscape in the digital world.

How the attack unfolded

The DDoS attack began on April 3 at 11:15 AM, with an initial surge of 67Gbps, quickly escalating to a staggering 965Gbps by 11:36 AM. The multivector strike deployed UDP, SYN, IP, and TCP flood techniques, making it particularly challenging to neutralize. The peak included 965Gbps in UDP flood229Gbps in SYN flood214Gbps in IP flood, and 169Gbps in TCP flood, demonstrating the attackers’ sophisticated tactics.

Why sporting events are prime targets

Qrator Labs suggests that the timing of the attack was no coincidence, coinciding with NHL star Alexander Ovechkin’s historic goal. Major sporting events often attract massive online audiences, making associated betting platforms vulnerable to large-scale cyberattacks. Similar patterns were previously observed during the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship in Germany.

What this means for cybersecurity

This incident highlights that industry-specific events are critical moments for potential cyberattacks. Companies involved with sports, betting, and live entertainment must strengthen their digital defenses proactively. With the FIFA Club World Cup and World Athletics Championships scheduled later this year, experts warn of possible new waves of cyber threats targeting these events.
