Getting a stable Internet connection in every room can be challenging, especially in older houses without pre-installed Ethernet wiring. While installing network cables is ideal, there are several efficient alternatives that avoid costly and time-consuming renovations.
Using the existing electrical wiring with PLC adapters
Power Line Communication (PLC) adapters use the home’s electrical wiring to transmit Internet data between rooms. Newer models supporting the G.hn standard are faster but incompatible with older HomePlugAV devices, so checking compatibility is essential before buying.
Plastic optical fiber: A promising future option
Plastic optical fiber (POF) is a flexible and easy-to-install alternative that can pass through old conduits. It enables Gigabit Ethernet speeds without interference or signal loss, although equipment costs remain relatively high.
Leveraging coaxial TV cables for Internet
If the house has TV coaxial cables, they can be repurposed with Ethernet-over-Coax adapters, providing high-speed connections up to 2.5 Gbps. However, the system requires direct cabling without signal splitters or amplifiers for optimal performance.
Extending WiFi with simple repeaters
WiFi extenders are an affordable and easy solution for expanding wireless coverage. They capture the existing signal and amplify it across larger areas, although they might reduce speed if several devices are connected simultaneously.
Building a WiFi Mesh network for seamless coverage
WiFi Mesh systems create a uniform, high-performance network across multiple nodes that communicate intelligently. While they offer superior stability and speed, they also come with a higher price tag compared to basic extenders.
