Wednesday, February 22, 2023 will go down in history when it comes to smartphone video games: dear readers, Angry Birds is dead. From now on, the game is called Red’s First Flight. Yes, the name could not be more bad and with less hook, but that is, in part, what Rovio, developer company, is looking for: that no one can find it by its original name.

In a statement published on its Twitter account, the studio claims that the popularity of Angry Birds is so high that it is negatively affecting the performance of the rest of its video games. In this regard, they point out that the title is called Red’s First Flight in the Apple Store, while in the Google Play Store it was removed on February 23. No palliatives.

“We have reviewed the market case for Rovio Classics: Angry Birds. Due to the game’s impact on our broader portfolio, we have decided that the game will be removed from the Google Play Store as of tomorrow, Thursday, February 23,” they commented. “Additionally, the game will be renamed to Red’s First Flight on the Apple Store pending validation. Rovio Classics: Angry Birds will remain on those devices where it was downloaded, even if it is discontinued.”

“We understand that this is sad news for the fans and for the team that has worked hard to make the game a reality. We are very grateful to the fans who have shown love to the brand and this game from the very beginning. We hope they can now continue their passion in games like Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds Friends and Angry Birds Journey, where every day we try to give players the best experience,” they concluded.

This is a curious move, especially when the game was relaunched a year ago and is not exactly free to play, but costs 0.99 euros. Remember its trailer:
