Apple plans to launch its first foldable device in 2028, a development that, according to well-known technology journalist Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, will be similar to a large iPad that unfolds to reach the size of two iPad Pros together.
This news marks a significant step for the company in a market that has seen the introduction of foldable devices in recent years, although Apple has been more cautious in its approach.
The design of the new device promises a foldable screen of approximately 20 inches.
Are foldable iPhones on the horizon? Apple aims for 2026 for its next innovation
Mark Gurman describes it as a “unique and uninterrupted piece of glass”, suggesting a breakthrough in foldable screen technology, which has faced significant challenges, such as the emergence of wrinkles on the surface.
Apple is actively working to minimize this, and the current prototypes feature an almost invisible fold line, although it has not yet been completely eliminated.
Regarding user experience, Apple is focusing on offering larger screens that are easily portable, rather than improving existing tablets to fit in pockets. This suggests that the company is looking to attract users who value portability without sacrificing the quality of the viewing experience.
Regarding the operating system, the new device is expected to run a version of iPadOS, which could be advanced enough to run macOS applications by the time of its launch in 2028.
However, compatibility between the two operating systems could be a topic to follow, as Gurman suggests that it will not be a pure hybrid of iPad and Mac, but will incorporate elements from both.
In addition, Apple is considering the possibility of foldable iPhones, although these are not expected before 2026. This reinforces the company’s trend towards innovation in mobile device design that meets the needs of modern users.
