Avatar: The Way of Water has achieved the expected results. After more than a decade waiting for the sequel to the film that marked a before and after in 3D technology in cinema, James Cameron has released the movie and has managed to make it the highest grossing film of 2022.

Globally, the film has grossed over $2.2 billion, making it the third highest grossing film in history (Avatar remains in first place). And, while waiting to see how it will fare in its Disney Plus run, there is no choice but to wonder what will happen with the next one. Cameron has promised Avatar 3, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5.

But what do we know about the third part?

When will Avatar 3 be released?

The first question to answer is the release date for Avatar 3. If plans go ahead, which seems obvious after the success of The Way of Water (but knowing Cameron and his delays, it’s not so clear), Avatar 3 will be released on December 20, 2024.

The film was shot, for the most part, simultaneously with the second film. However, the most time-consuming part of these feature films is post-production, as virtually every frame requires hours and hours of CGI additions. Therefore, there may be some delay, although in principle it is not in the mind of the creator. James Cameron has shot a whopping nine hours, so many cuts are expected until the final edit.

Avatar 3 to introduce fire navi, showing darker side of Pandora

What story will Avatar 3 tell?

The third part of the saga will continue the story of Jake Sully and his family. After confronting Colonel Miles Quaritch in The Way of Water, the protagonists flee the territory in which they found themselves, the Metkayina Reef, to hide in new territories and continue exploring the unique world of Pandora.

From what is known so far, the third part will introduce a new clan. After meeting the Metkayina, who were based on water, and the Omaticaya, the protagonist tribe based on air and the virtues of the forest, we will meet a clan centered on fire.

Moreover, it will not be the only new tribe we will meet in this film. According to Cameron himself, “we will meet two new cultures in the next film”, so it looks like we will see the Sully family traveling more than ever throughout Pandora.

There is still no definitive title for the movie, although the provisional name is Avatar: The Seed Bearer. Considering that it will be about fire, however, they may end up going for a “warmer” title.

How will it change from Avatar 2?

A recurring criticism of Avatar 2 is that, as much as it served to explore the new world of Pandora and how humans have adapted to the place, the story was too much like the original. In the end, the thesis of the entire Avatar universe is the same, and it doesn’t look like that will change too much, but we will see significant changes in the third part.

The first of these changes is that Jake will cease to be the main protagonist. Or, at the very least, he will cease to be the narrator. Instead, the baton will pass to Lo’ak. Jake and Neytiri’s rebellious son will take an even more prominent role in the third part, and everything will be narrated under his voice. Cameron believes that he is the most easily identifiable by the audience, and therefore will carry the weight of telling the story.

Another substantial change is that the story will not be taken from the point where the previous film ended. As happened between the first film and the second, there will be a significant time jump. And not only will we see a change of time, but also of space. Cameron has confirmed that in the following films we will see what happens on Earth while the story progresses in Pandora, something that will provide much more relevant information for the evolution of the story.
