With the longevity and quality of Apple products, choosing a second-hand iPhone can be an excellent alternative when we want to access the company’s technology at a lower cost. It is crucial, however, to ensure that the device is in good condition and functions properly. Following Apple’s recommendations, here are some key tips to consider when inspecting a used iPhone before purchasing it.
What to check in a second-hand iPhone?
As Apple states in this support document, if we’re buying online, the first step is to do so from a trusted store and make sure to check the return policy. Whether it’s a phone bought online or in person, Apple recommends performing the following checks.
1. Physical Condition and Damages: First, let’s check that the iPhone doesn’t have any severe damages that could affect its functionality. Inspect the screen for scratches, and don’t forget to check the edges and the back of the phone for dents or marks. It’s also important to examine the Lightning or USB-C connector to ensure it’s neither damaged nor obstructed.
2. Power On and Activation Lock: When turning on the iPhone, we might encounter different screens. If we see the lock screen or the “Hello” screen, it’s a good sign. In the first case, we should ask the seller to reset the iPhone for testing. In the second case, the “Hello” screen means the iPhone has been wiped and is ready for activation.
However, if we encounter a screen indicating that the iPhone is locked for its owner, it likely has Activation Lock enabled. In this case, ask the seller to disable it. If they can’t, it’s better not to make the purchase.
3. Parts and Service History: Within the Settings > General > About section, we can check if any part of the iPhone has been replaced. Apple provides details on whether the parts are official or not. This is essential to know because unofficial parts, especially batteries, can lead to significant operational or safety issues.
4. Battery Health: The battery is one of the most vital components of any smartphone. For iPhones, Apple has incorporated specific tools to assess its health. Starting from iPhone 6 and with iOS 11.3 onwards, we can go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health to check the battery’s health status.
This tool not only indicates the current maximum capacity of the battery compared to when it was new but also informs us about the optimal device performance. If the battery has been replaced with non-official Apple components, the tool will show a lack of information about its health. This indicates it might not work correctly or even pose security risks. Verifying this aspect is crucial to ensure the iPhone will maintain its charge and provide adequate performance during our daily use.
5. Carrier Lock: When we buy a new iPhone, especially through a contract with a carrier, the device is often “locked,” meaning it can only be used with that specific carrier. When buying a second-hand iPhone, we need to make sure this lock isn’t active unless we intend to use the same provider.
Apple facilitates this verification in the Settings app under General > About. If we see the phrase “No SIM restrictions” next to “Carrier Lock,” it means the iPhone is unlocked and free to be used with any carrier. If we see a particular carrier’s name, we need to consider unlocking it or ensuring it is compatible with our needs.
6. Connectivity and Basic Functions: An iPhone is more than just a phone; it’s a multifunctional tool we depend on in our daily lives. Therefore, it’s crucial to verify the following:
- Wi-Fi Connection: Ensure the iPhone can connect to available Wi-Fi networks to, among other things, use AirDrop. Poor connectivity could indicate problems with the device’s antenna.
- Camera: The camera quality is one of the iPhone’s standout features. By opening the camera app, we can take pictures in different lighting conditions and check if the images are sharp. Don’t forget to test all the device’s cameras if it has multiple.
- Speakers and Microphone: Clarity in calls and media playback is essential. We can check the sound quality of the speakers in the Settings section by adjusting the volume slider. For the microphone, crucial for using Siri, the Voice Memos app allows us to record and play sounds, allowing us to verify its proper functioning.
- Screen: The screen is our primary means of interaction with the device. Ensure it responds well to touch and adjust the brightness in Settings > Display & Brightness to verify it adapts correctly to different levels.
Purchasing a second-hand iPhone can be a smart investment if the right precautions are taken. By following Apple’s recommendations, we can ensure that our new device works perfectly and provides us with an optimal experience.
