BYD Unveils Sealion 05: An Affordable All-Electric SUV Starting at $16,000

BYD has officially launched the Sealion 05, an all-electric SUV poised to make waves in the mass-market EV segment.

Starting at just around $16,000, this vehicle comes in three trims, demonstrating BYD’s commitment to offering advanced technology at an accessible price point.

The base model features a 50 kWh LFP battery, delivering a range of up to 430 km (267 miles), while the mid-tier and flagship variants house a 60.9 kWh battery that extends the driving range to 520 km (323 miles).

Competing With Tesla: BYD’s Sealion 05 Aims to Change the Electric SUV Game

In terms of dimensions, the Sealion 05 measures 4,520 mm in length, making it slightly smaller than Tesla’s Model Y, which is known for its commanding presence in the electric SUV market.

Tesla’s base Model Y starts at an equivalent price of $33,300 with a longer range, highlighting BYD’s strategy to attract budget-conscious consumers with competitive pricing and features.

Charging efficiency is another highlight of the Sealion 05, with DC fast-charging capabilities reaching up to 156 kW. This allows drivers to recharge from 30% to 80% in just 18 minutes, a crucial feature for on-the-go lifestyle needs.

The SUV also incorporates BYD’s innovative “God’s Eye” smart driving technology, enhancing safety and convenience with a suite that includes adaptive cruise control, smart parking capabilities, and active safety features powered by an array of sensors and cameras.

Adding a dose of luxury to the price point, the Sealion 05 boasts a unique feature—a built-in refrigerator—ensuring that snacks and drinks remain cool during road trips.

The interior is equipped with a 12.8-inch floating center screen and an 8.8-inch driver display, providing modern aesthetics paired with functionality. With versatile storage options, including a 110 L front trunk and a rear trunk that expands to 1,460 L with seats folded, it caters to a lifestyle of flexibility and adventure.
