CalReady Offers Homeowners Cash Rewards While Powering 280,000 Homes

Sunrun has successfully transformed thousands of homes into the largest virtual power plant in the United States, a feat showcased through its CalReady program.

Linking around 75,000 home batteries from over 56,000 customers with solar and storage capabilities, CalReady is poised to deliver up to 375 megawatts (MW) of backup power during California’s peak electricity demands this summer, which translates to powering approximately 280,000 homes, or all of Ventura County.

As the summer heat pushes California’s energy grid to its limits, this extensive battery network not only helps maintain comfortable indoor conditions but also contributes to lowering electricity bills and pollution levels.

By returning clean energy to the grid between the peak hours of 4 PM and 9 PM from May through October, homeowners can actively participate in reducing reliance on fossil fuel plants during critical demand periods.

In addition to environmental benefits, the CalReady program allows homeowners to financially benefit as well. Participants can earn up to $150 per battery by sharing their stored solar energy, with total payments to Sunrun customers reaching over $1.5 million last year, and projected earnings nearing $10 million for the current year.

Looking ahead, it’s anticipated that more than 60% of new Sunrun customers will add battery storage to their solar systems by 2024, with that figure approaching 90% in California alone. This growth is a response to rising energy rates and a collective push towards more sustainable energy solutions.

By utilizing existing infrastructure—namely, residential solar panels and batteries—CalReady enhances resilience against a shifting energy landscape without the need for new land or expensive installations.

Sunrun CEO Mary Powell emphasizes that CalReady represents a “customer-led energy revolution,” empowering homeowners to become integral parts of the grid solution while reaping the financial rewards of their participation.
