Could the Fiesta Return as an Electric Model? Ford’s Plans Unfold

Ford has officially retired the iconic Fiesta in 2023, marking the end of an era for one of Europe’s best-selling small cars.

The final unit rolled off the assembly line at the company’s plant in Cologne, Germany, in July.

This decision reflects Ford’s commitment to shifting focus towards electric vehicles (EVs), backed by a substantial $2 billion investment to upgrade the Cologne facility into the company’s first carbon-neutral vehicle assembly plant.

As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, Ford may have plans to bring the Fiesta back as an electric model. Thanks to a strategic partnership with Volkswagen, which has already enabled the production of various electric models like the Explorer and Capri, the Fiesta could leverage Volkswagen’s MEB Entry platform.

Martin Sanders, Volkswagen’s head of sales and marketing, noted the success of this collaboration and hinted at future technological partnerships.

With Volkswagen’s upcoming ID.1 and ID.2 set to launch by 2026, the Fiesta’s size and specifications make it a potential fit for the smaller MEB Entry platform. Although the electric Fiesta would likely share dimensions with the ID.2, it is expected to feature a unique Ford design, setting it apart in the burgeoning EV market.

In December 2023, Ford debuted the Puma Gen-E, an electric vehicle inspired by the Mustang Mach-E, showcasing a range of up to 234 miles (376 km).

The company is also developing a low-cost platform in California, which could potentially give rise to smaller EVs like the Fiesta or Focus, though the first vehicle off this platform will be a mid-size electric pickup expected in 2027.

With a bright electric future on the horizon, the return of the Fiesta as an EV could signal a significant shift for Ford in meeting growing consumer demand for sustainable transportation.
