Among the big absentees from the non-E3 has been Capcom. While they’ve made appearances here and there at conferences with the big companies, they haven’t held their own event. Until now. They have decided to save their big announcements, or at least catch us up, for the Capcom Next Summer event in early July, when things are more relaxed. And while there hasn’t been any announcement that breaks the Internet, they’ve announced some very interesting things.
Although initially they didn’t bring up the topic of Resident Evil, at Capcom they finally decided to talk about their most famous franchise. Because although it’s true that they still don’t have anything official to present, that doesn’t mean they can’t start announcing things.
During the presentation, Koshi Nakanishi —director of Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, Resident Evil: Revelations, and Resident Evil 7— appeared to confirm that they are already working on Resident Evil 9. In the process, he also confirmed that he is the director of the game and that, although he can’t tell us any details about the game yet, he found it very difficult to decide what to do after Resident Evil 7. But now he’s got it and it feels solid.
That’s why everything we know about Resident Evil 9 comes from unofficial sources. According to insider Dusk Golem, known for revealing information about horror game projects, Resident Evil 9 is planned to be released in early 2025. Stating that it might be delayed, the game would be seven years in the making and would have started development around the same time as Resident Evil 8. Additionally, according to reports, the game would expand the open-world possibilities of the RE Engine that we already saw in Dragon’s Dogma 2. It’ll also make use of Monster Hunter Wild.
Leaks aside, we’ll still have to wait to receive official confirmations about the development duration, its release window, and whether it’s an open world or not. It doesn’t seem like Capcom is interested in waiting much longer if they’ve already announced its existence, but if they haven’t unveiled the game yet, we expect that it’ll still be a few weeks or months before they do so. Either way, the countdown for the new Resident Evil has begun.
