Since James Gunn signed on with Warner Bros. Discovery to lead DC Comics’ film strategy alongside Peter Safran, the filmmaker has been hard at work building a universe that wants to compete head-to-head with Marvel. This means that he has had to leave aside the universe created by Zack Snyder with his Justice League and Batman V Superman, including saying goodbye to Henry Cavill’s Superman and Ben Affleck’s Batman.

However, not all of the characters that already existed in the Snyderverse are going to die or be replaced with DC’s changes. In fact, there are several of them whose continuity is safe thanks to Gunn. Some of them obviously drink from the fact that they already appeared in his Suicide Squad, but others even come from other DC movies.

Below we leave you with all the characters of the old DC universe that will resist the change of perspective in Warner’s plans. By the way, this does not include Matt Reeves’ Batman universe, which will continue at its own pace independently.

Peacemaker – John Cena

One character who seems unchanging in James Gunn’s universe is Peacemaker. The anti-hero played by John Cena appeared as a villain of sorts in Suicide Squad, but then had his own redemption in the HBO series that bears the title of his own name. The first season of the series was a hit with audiences, as well as being a lot of fun, and there are plans for more seasons…. so yes, Peacemaker is sticking around, and along with him the rest of the cast of his series.

Amanda Waller – Viola Davis

Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller has already survived two independent installments of Suicide Squad, and she has done so making it very clear that she is the perfect boss of this group of villains and antiheroes. As it could not be otherwise, Gunn has rescued her for his new films and series, so her next appearance will be in Creature Commandos, an animated series in which the character will have a great importance. In addition, we must remember that she will have her own series on HBO Max titled Waller.

Weasel – Sean Gunn

Crazy Weasel Weasel, played by James Gunn’s brother, will serve as comic relief for the animated series Creature Commandos. At the end of Suicide Squad we saw that she had survived even though she appeared to have drowned, and it looks like she will continue to appear in other DC Comics spin-offs.

Blue Beetle – Xolo Maridueña

Although Blue Beetle is a movie that was produced before James Gunn reached the top of DC, the director has already confirmed that it is the first official DCU movie. This means that, even though it was a failure, it is already part of the new universe they are shaping at Warner, and therefore we will be able to see the character again in future productions.

Wonder Woman – Gal Gadot

This character is a reasonable doubt, but there are certain clues that lead us to believe that she will remain in the DCU. Even though Superman has suffered a recast and Batman has another one coming, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman could stay. In an interview, the actress confirmed that Gunn has among his plans to make a third part of Wonder Woman, and there is already in development a series about the origins of her world. Thus, Gadot may be one of the few survivors of this great screening of Gunn.
