As you hear it: Apple would be working on a doorbell that would use Face ID, the facial recognition technology incorporated in the iPhone and iPad.
This is stated by Mark Gurman through his newsletter, Power On. According to the journalist, Apple’s smart doorbell would work similarly to the iPhone. Just by looking at it, it would recognize our face and automatically unlock the door. The doorbell would integrate the Secure Enclave chip, responsible for storing and processing the information collected by Face ID.
According to Gurman, this device could be compatible with third-party smart locks in addition to using the HomeKit Secure Video system. This technology uses end-to-end encryption to protect your recordings, which would be stored in iCloud.
Other rumors suggest that Apple might collaborate with a company specialized in smart locks to offer a “complete system from day one.” The Bloomberg journalist also notes that Apple’s lock camera could use the anticipated “Proxima” chip, which would combine Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Apple’s doorbell would come to rival other devices like Amazon’s Ring doorbells, specifically the Ring Video Doorbell. They have an integrated camera and multiple sensors to alert the user when any anomaly occurs. For now, we don’t know how Apple’s doorbells will work beyond facial recognition, but it wouldn’t be surprising if they also included sensors like the Ring Video Doorbell.
One thing is clear, and that is Apple’s interest in making our home a smart home. In addition to the doorbell, it is rumored that the company is working on a smart camera and displays dedicated to the home with an aesthetic similar to the iPad. For now, Apple’s doorbell would still be in a very early stage of its development, so don’t expect to see it in stores soon.
