Ford Enhances F-150 Lightning Charging With Over-the-Air Update

Ford is set to enhance the charging capabilities of its popular F-150 Lightning electric pickup trucks from the 2022 and 2023 model years.

An over-the-air (OTA) software update will increase the maximum DC fast-charging current from 450 amps to 500 amps.

This update, confirmed by Ford spokesperson Sam Schembari, aims to reduce the charging time for the long-range Lightning model, cutting approximately five minutes off the time it takes to charge from 10% to 80%, bringing it closer to 40 minutes under ideal conditions.

Ford plans to roll out OTA updates to earlier Lightning models

This improvement reflects Ford’s commitment to providing ongoing support for its electric vehicle lineup, as the automaker plans to roll out OTA updates to earlier Lightning models as well.

Such enhancements not only add value to the Lightning but also exemplify Ford’s innovative approach to improving EV performance post-purchase.

The vehicle, built on the existing F-150 platform, incorporates several useful features, including a front trunk and a home backup power system, solidifying its appeal in the electric truck market. The 2023 model saw increased range, and for 2024, a new mid-tier Flash option will join the lineup.

In the evolving landscape of electric trucks, Ford has plans for a full-size electric truck replacement for the Lightning, codenamed Project T3, slated for a 2027 release.

Originally aimed for launch this year, the project saw delays amid a reshuffle of Ford’s EV strategy. Meanwhile, the Lightning continues to perform well, bolstered by improvements that enhance its functionality beyond the showroom floor.
