Secret Invasion is the upcoming major series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After releasing two films this year, Marvel is launching Phase 5 on television with this exclusive Disney Plus series starring Samuel L. Jackson in his usual role as Nick Fury.

In the series, as the name suggests, we will experience the hidden events of this covert invasion that has taken place on Earth in the Marvel Universe over the past years. We will get a close look at who the Skrulls are and what they intend to achieve by posing as ordinary humans on the planet. This is something we already saw in Captain Marvel, but now it takes on a new dimension in this series.

Secret Invasion will be the first step towards the Secret Wars, which will be the title of the upcoming Avengers movie—technically the 6th, as the 5th will be Kang’s Dynasty. However, the return of the Skrulls is not coincidental, but rather because of a major villain introduced in the series: Gravik. Now, let’s find out who this Gravik is.

Super-Skrull threatens the Marvel Universe

Gravik, the character portrayed by actor Kingsley Ben-Adir, derives his powers from the Super-Skrull in Marvel comics. While we already know that Skrulls can shape-shift their bodies at will, what sets Gravik apart is his ability to transform his limbs into rocks or other materials with the intention of causing harm.

In the comics, the Super-Skrull—whose name is not Gravik as in this case—is the result of an experiment that granted him the powers of the Fantastic Four. As such, he can become engulfed in flames, turn into rock, stretch his body, and become invisible. In the comics, the Super-Skrull is tasked with leading an advance force to eliminate Earth’s mightiest heroes and leave the planet vulnerable for his race to invade, as their own planet was destroyed by Galactus, and they seek a new home on Earth.

In the series, the story will have some differences, as the narrative of the Skrulls has already been established differently, as we saw in Captain Marvel. However, it could indeed serve as the first step towards the highly anticipated Secret Wars. It could be the beginning of a much larger war that could change everything in the MCU.

What remains unknown is whether Gravik’s powers will stem from the Fantastic Four—perhaps a hint at their upcoming film?—or from other Earth heroes such as Hulk, Thor, or any other. Everything is yet to be revealed, but we will soon find out in the Disney+ series.
