Honda has presented its new next-generation hydrogen fuel cell module, which promises an output of 150 kW (201 HP) and a volumetric power density more than three times higher than that of the current module, developed in collaboration with General Motors.
However, the production of this new component will not begin until 2027, which has led the company to launch a stationary power generator using the current generation hydrogen fuel cell technology.
With this move, Honda aims to expand its hydrogen fuel cell business beyond automotive, paving the way for applications in construction equipment and commercial trucks.
Honda wants to secure a place in the future automotive market
This strategy also responds to the need to diversify the applications of technology in an increasingly competitive and evolving market.
Despite significant advances in hydrogen fuel cell technology, the lack of adequate infrastructure remains a barrier, especially in California, where the first launches of vehicles are taking place.
The CR-V e:FCEV, which uses Honda’s current technology, is coming to market, but its availability is restricted by the limitation of charging points.
The independent development of the new hydrogen stack module could indicate a separation in the collaboration between Honda and General Motors, which has been in place since 2017.
Although details about GM’s participation in the new unit have not yet been confirmed, sources indicate that the automaker may be seeking new alliances in the sector, as it is rumored that they are in talks with Hyundai about hydrogen technologies.
This new initiative from Honda underscores the intense competition in the hydrogen vehicle market, where technological advancements must go hand in hand with the development of the necessary infrastructure to support its growth.
