Honda unveils its new electric SUV, the S7, in a bid to challenge Tesla’s dominance

Honda has officially launched its new electric SUV, the S7, in China, marking its entry into the high-end electric vehicle market.

This sleek and modern SUV is set to compete directly with popular models like the Tesla Model Y, starting at approximately $36,000 or 259,900 yuan.

The S7 promises a range of over 400 miles (650 km), with some versions boasting even greater capabilities—up to 620 km (385 miles) for the all-wheel-drive variant.

The S7 could be pivotal in shaping its future in the world’s largest electric vehicle market

Designed specifically for Chinese consumers, the S7 features dimensions closely mirroring those of the Tesla Model Y, measuring 4,750 mm in length and 1,930 mm in width. Honda claims that the SUV offers an exceptional driving experience with standout styling and enhanced comfort.

Unique design elements include a light-up “H” logo, foot-sensing electric tailgate, and retractable door handles that highlight the vehicle’s premium appeal.

Inside, the S7 showcases Honda’s first dimming panoramic sunroof, alongside a spacious interior that offers up to 860 mm of legroom in the second row. Premium features abound, such as a three-spoke multifunction leather steering wheel, a BOSE sound system, and a state-of-the-art infotainment setup incorporating a split 12.8-inch display paired with a 10.25-inch screen for controls.

The SUV is available in both rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations. The RWD model includes a 268 hp (200 kW) motor with an impressive range of 650 km (404 miles).

The AWD variant increases power to 469 hp (350 kW) while maintaining a competitive electric range. Comparatively, the Tesla Model Y starts at $36,200, offering a forecasted range of 593 km (368 miles) with its RWD version and up to 719 km (447 miles) in the Long-Range AWD model.

As Honda continues its strategic push into the EV market, the S7 could be pivotal in shaping its future in the world’s largest electric vehicle market.
