The great James Cameron film of this century has arrived today on Disney+ and it is our duty to explain everything about the movie. So it’s time to talk about the length of a movie that is long… very long.
Avatar 2: The Way of Water has just landed on the Disney+ service making it the most anticipated premiere of the summer on the Micky Mouse streaming app.
For those of you who want to start watching it today, June 7th at home, sitting comfortably on the couch with a popcorn while the rain gently falls outside, know that you’re going to have to start watching it soon… because it’s very long.
More than 3 hours of aquatic adventure
It’s time to get serious and say that Avatar 2: The Way of Water is a whopping 3:13 hours long on Disney+. If you go to the app right now and select the movie to watch it in 4K and with Dolby Vision technology, you will see that the duration is 3:13 hours.
This makes it one of the longest films in recent years, but in line with the new standard of length for adventure and superhero films.
For comparison, the first Avatar movie is 2:42 hours long, which is slightly less than the sequel. But, as we’ll see, it’s less than what’s coming.
Avatar 3 could be 9 hours long
While Avatar 3 is more than a year away if all goes as it should (December 20, 2024), the length of the sequel could scare anyone… if James Cameron’s threats are real.
The film was shot, to a large extent, simultaneously with the second one. However, the most time-consuming part of these feature films is post-production, where the cuts and the decision of how long the film has to last come in.
According to James Cameron himself, Avatar 3 is currently 9 hours long. And it will be the director’s job to see how much he cuts… the Canadian director’s idea is believed to be long… very long.
