Solo is the classic Fortnite experience. As soon as your parachute closes, you’re fending for yourself against hordes of other players. The biggest advantage is that you have nobody to worry about but yourself. You’re in charge of making all the decisions, whether it be what weapons to keep or discard or where to go next. Squads is a mode that pits teams of 4 players against each other. It’s a distinctly different experience than playing solo. Now, instead of just thinking about your own needs, you have to think about the needs of your teammates. Though it might be tempting, you can’t just fly solo here. Squads that stick together win together, and you want to make sure you’re doing things as a unit if you want to achieve Victory Royale. Players that have a mic and communicate have a leg up here. The other advantages are also pretty sweet: you can share supplies or weapons that you don’t have room for with your team and revive your downed squadmates. When push comes to shove, it can be nice to know you’ve got a team to watch your back.

Duos is a mode for the co-op fans out there. Rather than the larger four-person teams in Squad mode, Duos features teams of two. While having a squad of four can be great, things can get dicey if you’re playing with a bunch of random players or if you can’t find four friends who want to join you on the battlefield. Duos offer all the same team play features as Squad mode but on a smaller scale. If you’ve got a friend you like to play Fortnite with, this is the perfect way to team up with your buddy and wreak some havoc. It’s also easier to make decisions, such as deciding where to hole up or if you should build a fort, when it’s just the two of you.

50 v 50 is exactly what the name implies. Players are divided into teams of 50 and pitted against each other. Communication here isn’t as essential as with Squads or Duos, and 50 v 50 does allow for a certain amount of autonomy. Overall, this mode feels more like a round of Call of Duty or Battlefield with no respawns. Larger teams mean a larger scale, and that can lead to some pretty intense firefights and some absolutely massive forts if teams decide to hunker down. If you’re into action that’s a little more fast-paced, this mode might be for you. It blends the best elements of solo and team play to make for a totally original Fortnite experience.
