The thinking minds behind Character.AI, are Daniel De Freitas and Noam Shazeer, two ex-Google developers. As they explain on their website, “Character.AI, is making the sci-fi dream of having conversations and collaborating with computers come true”.
And how does Character.AI work? According to the details, Character.AI is based on a neural language model, in the style of ChatGPT. When you use Character.AI, you have a conversation with this model and it responds to you according to the corresponding celebrity. As with ChatGPT, the development team behind this AI maintains that it is not a viable source of information, so don’t believe much of what it has to say.
Character.AI also allows users themselves to create new characters. Within its website you will find the section “Create“, where you can also create chat rooms with said character. If, on the other hand, you already have in mind who you want to chat with, you should go to “Chat“. The web will show you the most popular characters of the moment, but you can also search for a specific celebrity. You just have to go to the magnifying glass symbol and type the name of your idol.
How can I create a character inside Character.AI?
If you haven’t found the character you want to talk to, you can always create it yourself. Doing so is quite simple: with your idea in mind, select + Create in the navigation bar and then, Create a Character. Here you will have to define the character or celebrity you want to recreate under the attributes of Name, Greeting (the greeting they would use), Visibility (for you to choose who can talk to the character) and Avatar (a photo that represents the character).
And that’s it. Click on Create It and start talking to your character. After a bit of chatting, you will be able to open the character’s settings to examine its attributes and add or remove new information. Just think, thanks to Character.AI, you can practice what to say when you finally meet your idol on the street.
