The panic caused by spiders is almost a genre of horror movies in itself. Beyond iconic scenes with spiders that we have seen in franchises like Indiana Jones or Harry Potter, there are dozens of movies that deal with arachnophobia in one way or another, just like with snake movies.

However, this insect has been somewhat neglected in recent years in terms of specialized films, and we have to go back to Arac Attack (2002) or Arachnophobia (1990) to find movies of this style. But finally, we have a substitute for all those films. Vermin: The Plague arrives in theaters on February 2nd, and its trailer promises a terrifyingly arachnid story.

A great movie hidden in a simple premise

Vermin: The Plague tells the story of Kaleb (Finnegan Oldfield), a young man who is about to turn 30 and has never felt more alone. Kaleb is fighting with his sister over an inheritance matter, and to make matters worse, he has cut ties with his best friend. Passionate about exotic animals, one day he brings home a highly venomous spider that accidentally escapes. But they quickly reproduce, and the building’s inhabitants will try to survive a plague that gets out of control.

Although its premise may seem very classic, the film has received two nominations for the César Awards (the Oscars of France) and won the Special Jury Prize at the Sitges Film Festival. This means that, even though its premise is classic, it is so well made that it could become one of the best horror releases of 2024. Undoubtedly, for those afraid of spiders, it will be a nightmare-worthy film.
