On March 20, 2020, two major titles in the world of video games, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Doom Eternal, were released simultaneously, creating an online phenomenon that resonated on social media. This phenomenon can be compared to the famous Barbenheimer duality, generating intense debates and memes about which of the two titles was the better choice to acquire.
Two very different games, but equally excellent
Doom Eternal, the highly anticipated sequel to the reboot of a classic video game, offered a frenetic action experience and brutality that captured the attention of hardcore gamers. Developed by Id Software and Bethesda, the game took the experience to a new level of intensity and complexity, becoming an arcade pastime that hooked its audience for hours. In contrast, Animal Crossing: New Horizons provided a simulation and virtual life experience. Instead of being a fast-paced shooter, this Nintendo title promised tranquility and escape, allowing players to gather resources, decorate homes, and socialize on a tropical island.
Despite their differences, both titles achieved unprecedented commercial success. Doom Eternal reached 450 million dollars in sales in its first year, while Animal Crossing became the best-selling game in Japan. Additionally, both were critically acclaimed, scoring 88 and 90 on Metacritic respectively, highlighting the quality of their gameplay offerings.
The emergence of both titles during the COVID-19 pandemic provided players with two forms of escape: the adrenaline of a supersoldier fighting demons and the calm of a virtual life. This simultaneous release reminded the world that video games can be a refuge in times of uncertainty, offering unique and complementary experiences that have left a lasting impact on the gaming community.
