Telegram isn’t the only messaging app seeing monumental user growth after the announcement that Facebook will buy WhatsApp for over $16 billion. LINE saw two million new accounts created in 24 hours after WhatsApp’s outage this past weekend.
LINE’s primary market is Asia but has started gaining traction in the United States as well. The influx of 2 million new users came primarily from the US, Europe, and South America, which is five times the normal growth in these markets. LINE recently reached over 300 million users globally back in November of this year.
“Our growth strategy has always included providing a strong network that can handle unplanned and unexpected increases in network traffic.”
Jeanie Han, CEO of LINE Euro-America, released a statement poking fun at WhatsApp’s downtime. “Our growth strategy has always included providing a strong network that can handle unplanned and unexpected increases in network traffic. We pride ourselves on providing a safe, secure platform that will always work when our users need it the most.”
