These are dark times for Twitter users. Elon Musk’s arrival at the social network (after paying 44 billion dollars) has been a huge earthquake, and there is not a day that goes by that the eccentric billionaire is not on everyone’s lips because of his decisions. And for proof, there are several buttons.

After picking up cable earlier, Musk ended up removing all of the “legacy” checkmarks that were on Twitter last week. Yes, all of them. All accounts that received a blue verified before Musk came into power lost it overnight, with the exception of a number of accounts that Musk manually verified. A measure carried out so that users who had the mark now pay for it by subscribing to Twitter Blue.

And, as if that were not enough, from April 21, all those who want to advertise on Twitter will need to have some form of verification. Matt Navarra, one of the biggest experts in social networks, shared on his Twitter account a screenshot in which the social network warned him about this new measure.

“As of April 21, your account must have a verification mark, or be subscribed to Twitter Blue or verified organizations to continue running ads on Twitter. Business accounts spending more than $1,000 per month already have gold checkmarks or will soon have them, and will continue to enjoy uninterrupted ad access for the time being,” Twitter stated in the email.

While many businesses will jump through the hoops of paying for the Twitter Blue subscription, this may affect smaller accounts that advertise their businesses and have very tight capital.

With a social network that was already making heavy losses before Musk’s arrival, the billionaire has focused his efforts on the verification system as a major source of revenue. In addition to granting blue verification marks to any account that pays the $8 monthly Twitter Blue fee, Twitter also grants a gold verification mark to organizations that pay €1,000 per month.

The question now is: will all these measures succeed or will they end up being the nails in Twitter’s coffin?
